I don’t talk much about my writing here (you can, however, read all about it on my other blog Rebecca Writes Romance) because I made the conscious decision to keep my personal and professional personas separate, but sometimes there’s news or an update that is just too good to share and you just want to shout it from the rooftops – or, in the era of social media, shout it from every digital account you own.
Being a self-published author takes a lot of work beyond just writing. You have to hustle to earn name recognition and to gain fans. Truthfully, I thought it’d be a lot easier than it’s proven to be based on my years of professional PR experience, but the world of book promotion is nothing like pushing technology that most people don’t understand. That was a walk in the park compared to my experience these past six months. While the writing has been infinitely rewarding, I’m not going to lie to you – there have been days when the promoting has been really frustrating and discouraging.
So, it’s days like today that make you feel so much better about what you’re doing. Days when you wake up, log into Amazon to see how many new ratings/reviews you have, check your category rankings and can’t stop smiling. Days when you see that you’ve legitimately cracked the Top 100 in a few different categories. Days when your book is ON THE SAME FREAKING PAGE AS CHARLAINE HARRIS’S SOOKIE STACKHOUSE SERIES. Yes, I know. That’s kind of a big deal for me. I remember reading most of the series on our trip to Seattle in 2009, devouring them in our hotel room, hoping that the book I’d started the year before would someday go somewhere. Today, I can rest easy that perhaps maybe it has.
I’ve always said I’m not doing this for the money, and that’s a good thing too because the pay is shit, but it’s days like this that make everything worth it.
Days like today that you feel like a million bucks.
