Hearth surround for range and vent
Of everything, the hearth style range surround is the marquee item that Alan is looking forward to. In terms of a backsplash, he likes the idea of it being brick so that it looks like at one point a hearth could have been there and as we modernized over the centuries, that’s where the stove ended up living. For Becky, she’d love the range area to have storage for spices—whether that’s in pull out cupboards next to the range itself, or built into the hearth surround.
We don’t want a sink in our island, but we do want a space within it to fit the microwave. The first image below shows the seating arrangement we envisioned. In terms of countertop, we think we want to extend the same counters (light marble) from the perimeter cabinetry to the island. We are debating whether to keep the base of the island the same color as the other cabinets or go with a natural stain.
Cabinetry colors and countertops
We want to stay away from white or off-white because I hate wiping down cabinets every day. I keep coming back to kitchens done in deep blue and blue green colors, including Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy and Naragansett Green, and Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue. If it’ll make the room too dark and dreary, we could be persuaded to go with BM Revere Pewter. For countertops, we’d like a black soapstone with white veining.
Special cabinetry elements
We are looking for an exposed plate rack, pull out garbage, and a spice rack. We’d like to see space for cookbook storage—perhaps this is where we add those shallow shelves along the perimeter of the room below the windows. For the pantry, we’re keen on having extra storage on the backsides of the doors. If we end up with a pitched roof in the kitchen, we want to have cabinets that go all the way up the slope. We dislike the idea of there being negative space up there.
We’ve decided against adding a wine fridge, but we still want dedicated wine storage. Preferably for at least 12 bottles. We’d also appreciate those racks that you can hang wine glasses upside down from. We love the look of the built-in in the first picture. The other two pictures serve as examples of the square cubby storage we’d like. We’re flexible on the exact details. Glass uppers may be appropriate here. Our idea here is to paint it the same color as the rest of the cabinetry.
Ceiling & Lighting
After thinking it over, we both agree on the exposed beams with white inset. In terms of lighting, we like a modern colonial lantern vibe, but we aren’t sure if we achieve that with multiple pendants or one longer one.
We are sort of split right now on this — do we want a dreamy, spa-like escape with calm, muted colors, or do we want to mimic what we have going on elsewhere and maybe inject it with a nautical feel given our proximity to the river and ocean? One thing we have decided is we want two mirrors and lighting to flank both of them. I need a big old tub (60+ inches). In terms of tile, I’ve gone back and forth over a pale hex tile in shades of white and gray, or a more traditional basketweave style. Also, after having discussed it, we’d like to get radiant floor heating.
